Kabla ya Vuli: Rain-Ready Checklist for Your Building Site in Dar

The short rains (mvua za vuli) usually reach Dar es Salaam in November. A half-built house with an open roof, cement bags on bare ground and no drainage can lose weeks of work and money in one heavy downpour. Walk your site this week, before the first storm, and use this checklist.

Kwa Kiswahili: Mvua za vuli zinakaribia. Kagua paa, hifadhi ya saruji na nondo, na mifereji ya maji kwenye site yako wiki hii kabla mvua hazijaanza.

1. Paa / The roof

  • Look for loose or lifted roofing sheets, especially at the edges and ridge.
  • Replace missing or rusted roofing nails and screws, and check the washers.
  • Check the ridge capping and the gaps where the roof meets the wall.
  • Make sure gutters and downpipes are fixed and not blocked by leaves or cement waste.

2. Saruji / Storing cement

  • Keep bags off the floor on a wooden pallet, at least a hand's width from the wall.
  • Cover the stack with a tarpaulin, and make sure water cannot run underneath.
  • Use older bags first. Cement that has formed hard lumps should not go into structural work.
  • Buy cement for the phase you are working on now, not for the whole project.

3. Nondo na vifaa vingine / Steel and other materials

  • Raise steel bars off wet ground on timber or blocks, and cover them.
  • Light surface rust is common, but flaking rust should be checked by your fundi or engineer before use.
  • Stack blocks and bricks where water does not pool, and keep tools and cables dry.

4. Maji yanaelekea wapi? / Site drainage

  • Watch where water flows during a light rain: away from the foundation is good, towards it is a problem.
  • Clear trenches and channels so water can leave the plot.
  • Do not let roof water fall straight next to the walls; lead downpipes away with pipes and fittings.
  • Open foundation trenches should not stay flooded. Ask your fundi how to protect them.

5. Maswali 10 ya kumuuliza fundi wako / 10 questions for your fundi

  1. Which parts of the house are most exposed if it rains this week?
  2. Is the roof fixed well enough for strong wind and rain?
  3. Where will we store cement so it stays dry?
  4. Is any concrete still curing, and how do we protect it?
  5. Where will the water go when it rains hard?
  6. Do we need a temporary cover over open walls or slabs?
  7. Are electrical cables and switches on site safe from water?
  8. What materials should we order now, before the roads get muddy?
  9. What work should wait until after heavy rain?
  10. Who checks the site after a storm?
