5 Wiring Myths That Get Dangerous in the Rainy Season

Rain finds every weak point in a house, and the most dangerous ones are in the wiring. Damp walls, leaking roofs and wet sites turn small shortcuts into shocks and fires. Before the short rains, check that none of these five myths are in your house.

Kwa Kiswahili: Maji na njia za mkato kwenye nyaya za umeme ni hatari. Kabla ya mvua za vuli, hakikisha nyumba yako haina makosa haya matano, na tumia fundi umeme aliyesajiliwa.

Myth 1: "Any cable will do"

Cables come in different sizes and types for different loads. A cable that is too thin for a cooker, water heater or pump overheats. Flexible cables are made for appliances and extension leads; the fixed wiring in your walls should be the type and size your electrician specifies, run in proper conduit.

Myth 2: "Tape fixes any joint"

Insulating tape is not a permanent joint. Twisted wires wrapped in tape loosen, heat up and let in moisture. Joints belong in proper connectors inside a covered junction box.

Myth 3: "The isolator switch is optional"

Water heaters, cookers and pumps should have their own switch that cuts power completely, such as a double-pole (DP) switch, often with a small neon light that shows when it is on. It lets you or a technician work on the appliance safely.

Myth 4: "A little damp near a socket is only cosmetic"

Water marks, rust stains or a musty smell near sockets and switches mean water is getting close to live parts. Switch the circuit off at the breaker and have an electrician check it before using it again. Fix the leak first.

Myth 5: "I don't need a qualified electrician"

Wiring mistakes are not always visible until something fails. A qualified, registered electrician sizes cables correctly, installs earthing and protective devices such as an earth leakage breaker (RCD), and tests the installation before it is used.

Quick checklist for your next site visit

CheckOK?
No bare or taped joints outside junction boxes☐
Cables on site kept off wet floors and covered☐
No water marks near sockets or switches☐
Water heater, cooker and pump have their own isolator switch☐
Earth leakage breaker installed and tested☐
Roof leaks above wiring fixed☐
Safety first: This article is general guidance. Electrical installation and repairs must be done by a qualified, registered electrician. If you see sparks, smell burning or feel a tingle from a switch, turn the power off at the main switch and call an electrician.
