2. Personal data we collect

The information we collect depends on how you use the marketplace.

  • Customers: name, account and contact details, delivery address and instructions, order history, items purchased, payment method and payment status, support requests, reviews and wishlist activity.
  • Vendors: contact and account details, shop information, product listings, order fulfilment information, payout details and information needed to verify or administer a seller account.
  • Payments: payment confirmations, transaction references and related records. Payment credentials may be collected directly by the payment provider you choose; that provider’s own privacy notice also applies.
  • Website and device use: technical information such as browser, device, log and session data, and cookie information where the site uses those technologies.
  • Communications: information you provide when contacting us, making a complaint, asking for help or responding to a survey.

Please provide accurate information and do not send us passwords, payment PINs or other authentication secrets in a message.

3. How we use personal data

We use personal data to:

  • create and administer customer and vendor accounts;
  • process orders, payments, refunds and seller payouts;
  • share the details needed to fulfil an order with the relevant vendor and delivery provider;
  • provide customer support and respond to complaints;
  • prevent fraud, misuse, unsafe transactions and security incidents;
  • maintain marketplace records and meet tax, accounting and other legal obligations;
  • improve the marketplace and understand its performance; and
  • send service messages about accounts, orders, delivery, payments and support.

We send marketing messages only where permitted by law. You can opt out of marketing at any time; this will not stop necessary messages about an account, order or transaction.

4. Why we may process your data

We process personal data only where an applicable legal basis permits it. This may include taking steps you request or performing a contract with you, complying with legal obligations, obtaining your consent where required, or pursuing legitimate business purposes where permitted by law and where your rights do not override those interests.

Where we rely on consent, you may withdraw it. Withdrawal does not affect processing that already took place lawfully.

5. How we share personal data

We share only the information reasonably needed for the relevant purpose. Recipients may include:

  • the vendor responsible for fulfilling your order;
  • delivery personnel or delivery providers who need delivery and contact details;
  • payment providers that process or confirm a transaction;
  • service providers supporting hosting, security, communications, customer support and marketplace operations;
  • professional advisers, auditors and insurers where needed; and
  • regulators, law-enforcement authorities or courts where disclosure is required or permitted by law.

Vendors and service providers must use personal data only for the relevant marketplace, service or legal purpose and protect it appropriately. We do not sell personal data.

6. Transfers outside Tanzania

Some service providers may process or store data outside Tanzania. Where a transfer outside Tanzania is necessary, we will handle it in accordance with applicable Tanzanian law and required safeguards or approvals. Contact us if you want information about the safeguards relevant to your data.

7. Cookies and similar technologies

The site may use essential cookies or similar technologies to keep the marketplace working, maintain sessions and protect accounts. If we use non-essential analytics or marketing cookies, we will provide the choices or consent controls required by law. You can also manage cookies through your browser, although blocking essential cookies may affect site functions.

8. How long we keep personal data

We keep personal data only for as long as it is reasonably needed for the purposes described in this Policy, including completing orders, supporting accounts, resolving disputes, preventing fraud and meeting legal, tax and accounting obligations. Retention periods depend on the type of record and the reason it was collected.

When information is no longer needed, we will securely delete or anonymise it, unless the law requires us to keep it for longer.

9. How we protect personal data

We use appropriate organisational and technical measures designed to protect personal data from unauthorised access, loss, misuse, alteration or disclosure. Access is limited to people and service providers who need information for their work. No online service can guarantee absolute security, so please protect your account credentials and contact us promptly if you suspect unauthorised use.

If a personal-data incident occurs, we will assess it and notify affected people or the relevant authority where required by law.

10. Your rights

Subject to applicable law, you may have the right to:

  • be informed about how your data is used and request access to it;
  • correct inaccurate or incomplete data;
  • request erasure or destruction of data;
  • request restriction of processing or object to certain processing;
  • request data portability;
  • withdraw consent where processing relies on consent;
  • exercise rights relating to certain automated decisions; and
  • complain to the Personal Data Protection Commission (PDPC).

To make a request, contact us using the details in section 1. We may need to verify your identity before responding. We will handle requests within the time required by law and explain if a legal exception applies.

You may also contact the Personal Data Protection Commission about your rights or a complaint.

11. Children

Ujenzi Direct is intended for people able to enter into marketplace transactions under applicable law. We do not knowingly seek to collect personal data directly from children for independent accounts or purchases. A parent or guardian who believes a child has provided personal data may contact us to request review and appropriate action.

12. Third-party websites and services

The marketplace may link to third-party websites or services. Their privacy practices are governed by their own notices, not this Policy. Please review those notices before providing personal data to them.

13. Changes to this Policy

We may update this Policy when our services, data practices or legal obligations change. We will publish the revised version on this page and update the “Last updated” date. Where required by law, we will give additional notice or seek consent.
